Day One Welcome
Building a Long-Term Bible Study Routine
Katie Orr loves helping women enjoy a deep, consistent time in the Bible, and her innovative Bible study methods are used by thousands around the world. She is the author of Secrets of the Happy Soul: Experience the Deep Delight You Were Made For, seven FOCUSed15 Bible studies, and is the creator of the Bible Study Hub community where you can receive training, encouragement, and accountability to enjoy God’s Word. Katie, her husband, and their three children live in central Florida.
In this conversation, Katie discusses the principles for good Bible study and how it originates in asking good questions and really digging into the context of each book. She emphasizes that a consistent bible study comes from setting manageable goals that are almost impossible to fail at so that you can build into a long term, sustainable bible study discipline. Her tool, the Bible Study Boulevard, provides an assessment that helps anyone discover where they are at in their Bible study routine and how to build onto that with methods that work for them.

Yana Jenay Conner is a writer and Bible teacher who seeks to help others think well about faith and culture. By God’s grace, she has served in full-time ministry for the past fifteen years in both the church and para-church context and earned a Master in Divinity in Christian Ministry from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She currently serves at Vertical Church as the Discipleship Director and hosts a podcast on singleness called "Living Single with Yana Jenay."
In this conversation, Yana Jenay discusses her approach to studying scripture. While reading the Bible she likes two practice two habits - reading through the entire book or section of scripture at once, and finding how the author continually returns to the main idea in each section. Reading entire books of the Bible in one sitting is important so you can understand the natural breaks of the book as well as the overall theme. One way to get through long chunks of scripture is to listen to it as having a narrator will help you move through the section without losing your place. Yana Jenay's one tip for the person new to studying scripture would be to be in community with others who seem to have a good practice of studying and comprehending scripture and have them teach you to do the same.

Kate Boyd helps believers who find themselves in the messy middle between conservative and progressive to more confidently walk the lines between doubt and certainty, faith and action with love and grace for all. She has traveled the world to interview and tell the stories of believers on mission, and inspired by those encounters, she creates spaces to facilitate wholehearted discipleship in the church at home. She is studying theology with an emphasis in church history and biblical languages at Perkins School of Theology.
In this session, Kate talks about how she looks at the story of the Bible and how it unfold over the 66 books. She explains how the narrative flows over 6 different phases from the beginning with creation to end and restoration. If you look at the overall narrative of scripture and recognize where you are within the 6 phases, she says you will have a better understanding of what each passage is conveying. Kate also explains how understanding the literary aspects of each passage is important to the overall understanding of the book. She encourages everyone to sit with others and study scripture together so that you can learn from other perspectives and ask questions that arise while reading.

Rachel Baker is the author of Deconstructed, a bible study guide for anyone who feels overwhelmed or ill-equipped to study the word of God. She is a pastor’s wife and serves the local church alongside her husband, Kile, in Northern Nevada where she is also the director of women’s ministries. She is a cheerleader, encourager, and sometimes drill-sergeant who believes in leading through vulnerability and authenticity. Her and her husband have two amazing kiddos and three dogs. Rachel is fueled by coffee, tacos and copious amounts of cheese.
In this conversation, Rachel discusses her journey in her relationship with Christ and how studying scripture and breaking it down was formative for her to find out what she believed about God. She explains how that process in turn gave her a heart for helping those who might be overwhelmed by studying God's word. Rachel describes her own journey of deconstructing the faith she had been raised in, and explains how evaluating specific traditions in light of the entire text of Scripture is important.

Keith Ferrin is an author, speaker and messaging coach. He and his wife, Kari, have three kids and live near Seattle. He has spent the last 25+ years speaking at conferences, churches, and schools around the U.S. and internationally. Keith's writing, speaking, and word-for-word presentations of whole books of the Bible help people not just read and study God’s Word, but also deeply ENJOY it!
In this session, Keith talks about how a believer can take Bible study from a "should" to a "want to" in their life. He discusses the five pillars of getting there: Position, Process, Plan, People, and Progress. He encourages each person to go to their Bible study relationally instead of just as a student, to have a process of studying large chunks at a time, and then to create a plan so that the bible study goals become a reality. He also encourages everyone to surround themselves with people who can make the personal Bible study come alive and then to look back at how far you've come in you personal walk with God.
